Part 3 — Quasi-Geostrophy

The workhorse approximation of the whole subject. Small-Rossby-number flow is captured almost entirely by conserving one scalar, the quasi-geostrophic potential vorticity. From there: Rossby waves and the ray theory that bends them into great circles, and the exact decomposition of a two-layer fluid into independent barotropic and baroclinic modes.
